              Senator Elizabeth Warren

Sen Warren’s speech against Sen Session’s nomination as the next Attorney General was met with a most unusual “silencing” requiring she stop speaking and go back to her seat.  It was Sen McConnell’s request of the Senate Chair to note that Sen Warren broke Rule 19 which doesn’t allow any Senator to impune the motives of any other senator while on the Senate floor.  The words in question came out of a quoted portion she’d given of the late Coretta Scott King’s 1986 letter regarding the qualifications of Jeff Sessions for a federal judgeship.  Mrs. King had written about Sen Session’s using “the awesome power of his office to chill the free exercise of the vote by black citizens.”  Later, other male Democrats quoted this statement and were NOT silenced.
